158/5000 In addition to excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, wood is a material, alive and resistant; offered in different colors and types, adaptable to any environment. From the living room to the bedroom, without neglecting the service areas such as the kitchen and bathroom, there is a perfect solution for everyone. The distinguishing factors are:
- the material, its structure, the treatment
- the type of pose
- behavior over time
- color
Each of them connects with other elements, such as housing needs, the characteristics of the environment in which the parquet will be laid and the economic possibilities. It is good to take note of it at the time of purchase, with a certainty, namely that personal taste remains central.
Let’s see what are the most requested materials and colors, so as to favor a conscious choice.
MATERIAL: WHICH WOOD DO YOU PREFER?
There is no universally better typology, it depends on what the specific needs are. These are the possible options:
Solid wood
It is the classic flooring, in beams at least 12-13 mm thick (they can vary greatly in size), with a male-female joint on the sides. Only once it has been laid does it require all the finishes (oiling, polishing, etc.) therefore it is not suitable for ordinary operations, as it must rest for a period of never less than 30 days.
Pre-finished or multilayer
It consists of layers with joints on the sides. In noble wood the surface layer (2,5 to 5 mm thick), while the underlying one, called support, is obtained with soft wood lamellas, usually in birch or fir, to give stability. The laying work is faster, after which no further fitting procedures are needed.
Industrial
Strips with a thickness ranging from 10 to 22 mm, also of different wood species, are arranged in tiles. Made up of scraps from other processes and less valuable parts of wood, they have undergone a clear expansion in recent years, since a pleasant design is combined with low cost.
Laminate
It is actually a “fake parquet”, common above all in environments subject to intense foot traffic, such as offices, shops and public places. Resin glues hold together high density wood fibers (composite wood) covered with a very resistant decorative layer, which perfectly reproduces the appearance and nuances of the wood.
A transparent film (overlay), composed of melamine resins and metal oxides, protects the flooring from abrasion and wear.
The ancient parquet
Coming from castles, farmhouses and huts, the old timber forms a new wooden floor, for which 4 or 5 mm thick lamellas are obtained, with a birch wood background supported by a foil around 6-7 mm thick, the so-called counterbalancing.
Depending on the destination, the laying can be done using glues or more classic methods such as nailing. Since it is particularly expensive, it is frequently replaced by aged parquet: new beams worked according to traditional methods, which reproduce the imperfections of time and wear.
WHICH COLORS ARE THE MOST COMMON FOR PARQUET
A certain color corresponds to the type of wood. Naturally, light tones are preferable in poorly lit environments, remembering that parquet, in contact with light, tends to oxidize, becoming darker or, in the case of teak, lighter.
We can distinguish:
- Red woods: American fir, acacia, cherry, doussie, merbau.
- Dark woods: wenge.
- Light woods: maple (American, European or Canadian), beech, ash, larch, oak.
- Brown woods: afrormosia, iroko, walnut, teak, oak.
These characteristics represent the basic elements for the choice of a parquet, but other important factors must not be overlooked, such as the style of the furniture or the location where it must be laid.
